Ben and Jess are brother and sister but were separated in childhood when their mother died; their father was not in the picture. Ben was cared for by a rich family that gave him a valuable education so today he is a freelance journalist at the moment living in Paris researching his next scoop. Jess was not as fortunate she had lived with various families who did not care for her and is now running away from a bad barman so she decided to go to Ben in Paris and stay with him for a while; she is broke. When she arrived at his apartment he is not there as he had promised. There was blood on the cat and a smell of bleach.
With Jess as our hero, she started to look for Ben, where is he? What happened? Why?
Ben’s apartment is in a very rich building with a concierge, but the neighbors are not friendly at all, actually the absolute opposite.
When I bought the book, I thought I would also read about Paris and places we visited when we were there. I was disappointed, I am quite convinced that this author does not know Paris at all, the book could have played out anywhere.
I find the people of the book very uninteresting, the plot overthought and quite illogical. The book is very long, much too long; I dislike the way each chapter takes us into another character’s head. It was the same as in “The Widow” by Fiona Barton that I recently read and also did not like. This way of telling a story is not good for the feeling of continuity; I get lost, in particular because the writing does not change with the change of head talking/thinking; which may have made it easier to change personality.
